The Case of Oneitis

Oneitis, in pickup terms, is the case of one man convinced that a woman is special and will be his one day. He forgets the other girls in the world and focuses on this one, single, solitary girl. This girl becomes the world to him. The only problem is, she isn’t his. She isn’t his girlfriend, and, truth be told, she likely will never be because she knows he has oneitis for her.

Oneitis is the killer of all men at some time in their life of another.

Let’s look at this from the woman’s perspective. When you show oneitis to her, you are showing your hand to various truths about your personality and your mindset. The most important of which are the following:

1. She will never lose you – she already owns you and knows you are in her back pocket
2. She is likely too good for you

Let’s take a look at #2 even further. Most of us have had reverse oneitis in our life. There is a girl who we “know” we can have. However, what are the common traits of this relationship? You are likely distant to her. You brush her aside like a puppy. You likely aren’t overly attracted to her. HOWEVER, you give her just enough attention to keep her attention to you alive. The key here is that you just aren’t that into the girl. Why do you keep her around?

1. Boost of ego
2. To be nice
3. To help you get other girls (case of competition)

Now that we have looked into Oneitis a bit, there is a way to break out of this vicious disease.

Breaking Oneitis

Let’s go back to the example that we showed before of the girl having oneitis for you. You probably have slight feelings for her, but you knew that you didn’t have to act on them. However, think about her finding another guy who she has oneitis for. Maybe this guy is just as cool or even cooler than you. What happens? You begin to get a bit competitive. It opens up your mind to the possibility that she can get guys that are on par with you. It also becomes a slight ego shot. She no longer needs you and can replace you with someone else. Also, you will soon lose the attention she used to give to you. Finally, the most important part, you start to finally consider her for more than just friendship because she now has the social proof necessary to show that she is on your level. This is all even more powerful in the reverse situation as girls crave social proof even more than guys do.

Applying this to your situation, you need to combat oneitis by finding a variety of girls that you are interested in. Just like in business negotiations, you don’t show you hand right away. Let the girls compete for you rather than the reverse. The benefit of this is that girls know they can’t just throw you in their back pocket and they know that they are a realistic option for you rather than just a pipe dream. You are essentially bringing her into your level and making her compete with you.
